  • 1 large Watermelon Choose a ripe watermelon with a dull skin and a deep sound when knocked.
Vegetables
  • 1 medium Cucumber Use for alternating layers in the salad.
  • 1 medium Red onion Optional, for added flavor and color.
  • 1 cup Cherry tomatoes Optional, for fresh, juicy bites.
  • 1 medium Jalapeño Optional, for a spicy kick.
Cheese
  • 1 cup Feta or mozzarella cheese Cheese can be cubed and added to the salad.
Seasoning and Garnishes
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil For drizzling over the salad.
  • to taste Black pepper For seasoning.
  • to taste Flaky salt For a finishing touch.
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh herbs (mint, basil, or cilantro) Use for garnishing.
  • 1 lime Lime wedges For squeezing over the salad before serving.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Slice both ends off the watermelon to create flat bases, then stand it upright and cut off the rind from top to bottom.
  2. Lay the watermelon on its side and slice into thick planks, stack them, and cut into even strips to form cubes.
  3. Repeat cutting process to dice cucumber and cheese into similar-sized cubes.
Assembly
  1. On a flat platter, arrange alternating layers of watermelon and cucumber. Optionally add cheese and other ingredients.
  2. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with black pepper and flaky salt.
  3. Garnish with fresh herbs and lime wedges before serving.

Notes

For a more impressive presentation, chill the ingredients beforehand and use a flat plate instead of a bowl. Make two checkerboards for larger gatherings to ensure everyone gets a bite.
